Introduction of Speaker

Prof. Rödel Jürgen, the vice president of University of Darmstadt Germany, winner of the Leibnitz Award which is the supreme scientific award in Germany, the member of Germany National Academy of Sciences and Engineering. He successively received master's and doctoral degrees in material science from University of Leeds and University of California, Berkeley in 1983 and 1988 respectively. He has long been engaged in the research of new functional materials, and has conducted systematic research in lead-free piezoelectric ceramics, high temperature dielectric materials, and fatigue characteristics of functional materials, etc. So far, more than 300 journal papers have been published with over 10,000 citations and H index 51.

On May 4th 2017, Prof. Jürgen Rödel, academician of German National Academy of Sciences and Engineering, vice president of Darmstadt University of Technology, was invited by School of Civil Engineering at Wuhan University to give a lecture Reliability of Lead-freepiezoceramics. He introduced the latest achievements and trends in lead-free piezoelectric ceramic research and related industries in recent years. There were more than 30 teachers and students attend this lecture who came from School of Civil Engineering, School of Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering, School of Physics and Technology at Wuhan University, and Wuhan University of Technology.

Professor Rödel first introduced the overall condition of Darmstadt University of Technology, and then talked about the current development of piezoelectric ceramics comprehensively. Nowadays, the Lead-based piezoelectric ceramics is widely used in sensors, actuators and other fields. However, the production, usage and disposal of lead-based piezoelectric ceramics have a serious impact on human body and the environment, many countries have promulgated "Lead-free lead" regulations in recent years. So looking for lead-free piezoelectric materials is quite imminent, thus lead-free piezoelectric materials become a world-wide research hot spots. Many international companies have invested a lot of money in the field of research, at present, some lead-free piezoelectric ceramic products have entered the application market, and gradually into the high-end products development stage, such as the engine piezoelectric nozzle, which fully illustrates the lead-free piezoelectric ceramic instead of traditional lead Piezoelectric ceramic possibilities.

Professor Rödel presented the phase diagram, fatigue properties and mechanical properties of lead-free piezoelectric materials such as BNT and KNN, comparing with the PZT materials. He also introduced their research work on the performance improvement of NBT-BT- (KNN) and BCT-BZT lead-free Electric ceramic, which would help to solve the lead-free piezoelectric ceramics problems in the application of large coercive field, low polarity and low temperature.
