In 2016, by adhering to the philosophy of "brave enough to take responsibilities, strive for excellence," SCE achieved fruitful results in discipline construction, scientific research, talents cultivation, social service, and cultural heritage. Thanks to the active participation and enthusiastic votes by teachers, students and alumni, “2016 Top Ten News of School of Civil Engineering” were selected recently.
The details are as follows:
1. Professor Liu Quansheng’s team won the second prize of National Scientific and Technological Progress. Professor Lu Yiyan’s team won the first prize of Scientific and Technological Progress of Hubei Province.
School of Civil Engineering makes progress in the level of scientific research. Prof. Liu Quansheng attended the 2016 National Science and Technology Award Conference at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
On January 9, the CPC and the State Council held 2016 National Science and Technology Award Conference in Beijing. "The key stability monitoring and control technologies and the applications in deep tunnel (Lane) Road fractured weak surrounding rock", proposed and completed by Prof. Liu Quansheng, won the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award.
The results of the project are widely used in the deep roadway, traffic tunnel and national defense tunnel, and so on. The technical level of the monitoring and control of the stability of the deep rock tunnel in China is improved, and the economic and social benefits are remarkable. "The key technology and application of high-performance fiber composite materials to enhance the mechanical performance of concrete structures", led by Professor Lu Yiyan, won the first prize of Scientific and Technological Progress of Hubei Province. The project results were applied to more than 100 projects, including the Three Gorges Highway Bridge, the South Square expansion project of Hankou Railway Station, Daling River Bridge in FuJin line, etc. Those applications involved in bridges, civil engineering, hydropower and other fields, with significant social and economic benefits.
2. The change and transition of the Party Committee and executive leadership went smooth, to create a new situation.
On Dec. 29, 2016, the meeting about executive leadership transition was held, in which Zhao Xuemei, the Party Committee member and the director of Organization Ministry at Wuhan University, announced the cadre appointment and removal documents “the notice on the new administrative leadership of SCE”: Liu Quansheng is the dean of SCE; Fang Zheng, Hu Heng, Zou Weilie, Li Pinrong are the associated deans of SCE.
On Jan.12, 2017, the third session of CPC Wuhan University SCE was held grandly. All the representatives listened carefully and approved the Party Committee work report, elected the third Party Committee members: Lei Shifu, Li Haiyan, Xie Xianmou, Fang Zheng, Hu Heng, Zou Weilie, Li Pinrong, An Xuwen, Xiao Xianxian. Among them, Lei Shifu is the secretary of Party Committee, Li Haiyan and Xie Xianmou are the deputy secretaries.
3. SCE carried out "Two Studies, One Action" learning and education activities. The Party Committee won the "Advanced Sub-Party" title of Wuhan University.
Since March 2016, "Two Studies, One Action" learning and education activities were launched: the center group of the Party Committee (expansion), the faculty and staff Party branch, the student Party branch had organized theoretical study; the Party members and cadres were organized to go to anti-corruption advocacy education base in Hubei Province, Xinxian red education base in Henan Province, rural reform demonstration base in Guanqiao village of Hubei Province.
5. National Civil Engineering Graduate Academic Forum, the National Municipal Engineering Doctoral Graduate Forum were held successfully in Wuhan University. Four academicians discussed about the innovation and sustainable development of civil engineering, and spoke their minds on municipal engineering construction freely.

6. Water Supply and Drainage Science and Engineering was successfully selected 2016 "Jingchu Outstanding Talents" among undergraduate universities and colleges in Hubei Province. Engineering Mechanics was rated class A in the university professional assessment. The discipline construction of SCE has achieved obvious effects.
7. Fruitful and frequent international exchange and cooperation.
From August 20 to 25, invited by the University of Dundee UK, the dean Xu Lihua, associate dean Liu Quansheng, Professor Fang Zheng and other people visited a number of well-known colleges and universities in the UK, met with the prestigious professors, and conducted plenty of academic exchanges with high level scientific research teams. It was a quite harvest visit.
"Experimental and Theoretical Study on the Constitutive Behavior of Intelligent Materials under Multi - field Coupling", led by Prof. Chen Minxiang’s team, was successfully submitted to the teacher-student exchange program (referred to "million Talents Plan") among Hong Kong, Macao and Mainland cities of the Ministry of Education.
Professor Richard J. Bathurst, academician of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, professor of Civil Engineering at the Royal Military Academy of Canada (RMC), director of Geotechnical Engineering Center of Civil Engineering Department at University of Queensland Canada (QU), was invited to visit SCE. Prof. A lot of experts and scholars were invited to give lectures and seminars here, including Prof. Antonio Ferreira, the editor-in-chief-of journal Composite Structures; Prof. Zhang Chuanzeng, academician of the European Academy of Sciences, the director of Civil Engineering Department at University of Tokugawa Germany. What’s more, Professor Wu Hongwei, the associate vice president of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, was appointed the visiting professor of Wuhan University. The number of country (territory) visits reached a high record, which brought tremendous effects and progress in teaching and research for School of Civil Engineering.
8. The effects of grid engineering and dormitory culture construction becomes increasingly apparent, which spread the good voice and positive energy.
Recommended by the University, our student Party work was inspected by “Two Studies, One Action” group of Central Organization Department and Hubei Provincial Party Committee, and we got highly praise; we had receipted leaders and organizations to visit and guide our dormitory culture construction work more than ten times, including Hubei Daily, Nanjing University, China Railway 11th Bureau, president Dou Xiankang of Wuhan University, deputy secretary Wang Chuanzhong, etc., which received a good response; the undergraduate 2014 & 2015 Union Party branch won the second prize in Central China Party Branch Contest, meanwhile, our Party work of graduate students won the second prize and third prize in "Vitality Innovation Project"……

9. Better news for SCE is still to come: The discipline competition, academic innovation, cultural and sports activities, etc.
Undergraduate students including Yan Zhongxi, Wang Xueyao, Li Ying, Liu Yang, Hao Xiaohan, Cai Kangyi, Meng Zixiong, Zhou Tingting, Li Zhenzi won the ninth "Higher Education Cup" national college students advanced mapping technology and product information modeling innovation contest, the first prize individually. The undergraduate student Shi Ding Yinrong, enrolled in 2014, won the first prize of 2016 National College English Competition. The undergraduate students Wu Yangwei and his team, enrolled in 2013, won the first prize of the fifth session of the Central South China College Students Structural Design Competition. The undergraduate students Liang Junhai and his team, enrolled in 2013, won the first prize of the fourth session of the Hubei Province College Students Structural Design Competition. The PhD candidate Chen Dan, majored in Municipal Engineering and enrolled in 2014, won the first prize of "Academic Innovation Award" of Wuhan University in 2016. The first PhD Chang Jiangfang enrolled in Solid Mechanics in 2012 was granted doctoral degree successfully.

We have achieved 100% employment rate for three consecutive years, won the "Employment Guidance Advanced Unit", "Communist Youth League Advanced Unit", "Top Ten Volunteer Service Unit", "Sports Moral Award", and "Tengfei Cup" man Basketball Championship of Wuhan University. 10. Alumni donated ￥500,000 Yuan to set up a "Civil Engineering Alumni Scholarship" to help students.
On January 13, 2017, the donation ceremony of "Civil Engineering Alumni Scholarship" was held in Wuhan Zhenglong Decoration Engineering Co., Ltd. Mr. Wang Ke, the donator who enrolled in Civil Engineering in 1988 and also the president of Wuhan Zhenglong Decoration Engineering Co., Ltd., said that the establishment of the "Civil Engineering Alumni Scholarship " will be divided into ten years to finance outstanding students and students who have financial difficulties. Wang called on other alumni to join in the donation, to make "Civil Engineering Alumni Scholarship" bigger and stronger, thus, there would be much more students who can receive the help. It was a good way to promote the development of SCE in a rapid speed.
