Relying on School of Civil Engineering at Wuhan University, the Key Laboratory of Geotechnical and Structural Engineering Safety uses many subordinating disciplines to conduct scientific research, i.e., Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Engineering and Protection Engineering, and Engineering Mechanics, etc. The Lab develops the all-chain innovative researches of basic theory, common technology and engineering applications by focusing on the scientific development frontier and the key scientific and technological problems occurred in national and provincial major engineering projects. Since its establishment, the Lab has formed the following key research directions and characteristics: 


(1). Deformation of Engineering Rock Mass and the Stability Control:

We have made a series of innovative results in the fields of Rock Mass Multi-Field and Multi-Phase Coupling Theory, High Steep Slope Progressive Damage Mechanism and Deformation Control in Large-scale Hydropower Project, Stability and Safety Control of Deep Underground Engineering Surrounding Rock. All of above mentioned achievements form a distinctive feature in the domestic and foreign counterparts and get highly praised.


(2). Complex Foundation Treatment and Soil Slope Reinforcement:

The contributions in the areas of Building Correction Principle and Technology, Geo-synthetics Applications and other fields have made a high degree of recognition at home and abroad. In recent years, we have featured ourselves distinctively with numerous research directions, i.e., New Theory and New Technology of Soft Soil Foundation Treatment, Unsaturated Soil Characteristics and Soil Slope Disaster Prevention Technology, Geo-synthetics Reinforcement and Geotextile Filter Mechanism, New Anti-Silt Geotextile and Electric Geotextile Synthetic Materials, etc. 


(3)Wind Earthquake Resistance and Firefighting of Engineering Building Structures:

We have made innovative achievements in below areas, i.e., Mechanical Properties and Constitutive Relationship of High-performance Composite Materials, Design Theory of High-rise Building Composite Structures, Stability Theory of Steel Structure, General Design Software for Steel Structure, Wind Resistance of High-rise Building and Transmission Tower Line System, Fire Safety Technology in Subway Tunnels, Building Fire Performance Evaluation and other aspects.


(4). Engineering Structure Safety Assessment and Reinforcement:

We take the lead in areas of Structural Reliability Theory Applied to Engineering Design Standards, Reliability Assessment and Strengthening of Completed Building, etc., all of which form the typical research characteristics.


Over the past five years, the Lab has undertaken more than 10 national key major programs, including National Program on Key Basic Research Project (973 Plan Program), National Hi-tech R&D Program of China (863 Plan Program), National Natural Science Foundation of China the Key Program (NSFC). Meanwhile, 74 programs funded by NSFC and over 100 ministerial and provincial level projects have been approved, the total sum of vertical programs is over 80 million Chinese Yuan. Apart from that, we have won 14 Science and Technology Achievement Awards in the provincial and ministerial level, and edited more than 20 national standards and industry standards. And we have cooperated with relevant large-scale enterprises to establish platforms combined with production and research, to apply our scientific and technological achievements to practical applications, more than 60 patents are approved at the same time. The development of structural reinforcement and green construction integration technology and more than 30 kinds of materials, are used in the Three Gorges Engineering, South-North Water Diversion Engineering and other large projects, with the annual conversion output value 100 million Chinese Yuan. We help to cultivate a large number of theoretical and technological innovation talents in the field of geotechnical and structural engineering safety evaluation and control.
