The Mechanics Experimental Teaching Center at Wuhan University, located at the foot of Luojia Mountain covered with luxuriant green, along the boundless East Lake, has extended its reach as a leading presence in Solid Mechanics and Fluid Mechanics. It was transitioned from the Labs of Mechanics at former Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering (WUHEE) and former Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping (WTUSM) in 2000, and was assessed by the Hubei Provincial Department of Education in 2001. With continuous development, it was awarded the Mechanics Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Hubei Province in 2006.


By exploiting its engineering fundamentals and stressing the educational philosophy of “teaching reform and cultivation-orientation”, the Center seeks to educate the very best students for future positions of entrepreneurship and innovation with solid knowledge, global view and proficient skills. Under the guidance of Wuhan University, the School of Civil Engineering and the School of Hydropower and Water Conservancy, we cooperate and forge ahead, and constantly promote the experimental teaching reform and achieve gratifying results.


Covering a total area of 6,805 square meters, the Center has four laboratories, i.e., Materials and Destruction Mechanics, Vibration Mechanics, Mechanics Simulation, and Hydrodynamic Fluid Mechanics which reached the first-class level in China. The center is equipped with a number of large-scale precision test equipments, including the electro-hydraulic servo static and dynamic material testing machine produced by the British Britishron company, 2 m × 2 m vibration test bed produced by Japan's Heron Palace Company, PIV particle image flow field instrument produced by TSI company of the United States and pseudo-power experiment system, etc. We also have the large finite element softwares such as Ansys, Abaqus, Adina and so on, which are commonly used world-wide. In 2006, the building that holds Mechanics Experimental Teaching Center was completed, which provided the good environment and the basic condition for the mechanical experiments and teaching activities.


The Mechanics Experimental Teaching Center has always attached importance to self-made equipment and has independently made more than 20 kinds of equipment and instruments, namely streamline demonstration experiment instrument, energy equation demonstration instrument, rotating sliding friction test machine and horizontal tensile testing machine, etc. The hydraulic fluid mechanics equipment and its experimental teaching model produced and created by itself has been adopted by more than 20 colleges and universities, many of which are technically supported by our Center to build their own laboratories. We have always been playing a very good demonstration role in the country.


Since 2001, the Center has fully integrated the mechanics experimental teaching system and resources, keeping the ability training as the main line, to build a new way of teaching system featuring with the hierarchical experimental teaching pattern (basic - comprehensive - research and innovative), the multi-module and independent open style and the cohesion among them. Apart from that, we also have explored the mechanics teaching reform combination with material experiment and numerical simulation experiment. Through years of unremitting practices, we have played a long-standing demonstration role in the teaching texts, quality course establishment and the development of experimental instrument and devices. The center has formed a more complete, unique experimental teaching, scientific research system. In order to meet the needs of discipline development, the Center continuously improves and updates the experimental contents and texts. In recent years, a series of theory textbooks, experimental materials and characteristic teaching materials have been published, which meets the requirements of experimental teaching and reform.


A number of high-level experts, teachers and laboratory technicians are serving in the Center, of which the experts direct the curriculum development, the backbone teachers and laboratory technicians mentor and guide the students. There are 7 professors, 6 associate professors and 9 senior engineers at present. The Center opens different types of mechanics experiments to 15 undergraduate majors for 7 Schools, i.e., School of Civil Engineering, School of Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering, School of Power and Mechanical Engineering, School of Resources and Environmental Engineering, School of Urban Design, School of Surveying and Mapping, School of Economics and Management. Meanwhile, graduate students participate in the experimental courses of mechanics to foster their practical abilities and creativity. By extracting the essence from the Three Gorges Project, South-to-North Water Diversion Project and other national key projects, we have set up a comprehensive and innovative experimental programs for teaching, and achieved good results. The multi-function high-pressure water seal experimental device, produced by us has been widely employed in domestic large-scale hydropower projects, such as Longtan, Waterfall Ditch and Goupitan, etc. Our heavy-duty low-speed friction testing system is also widely used in slip friction experiments of large water resources and hydropower projects, such as the Three Gorges Dam and Danjiangkou Reservoir.
