The History of School of Civil Engineering

The School of Civil Engineering was composed by the School of Civil Engineering and Construction at the former Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering (WUHEE) and several relevant disciplines of the School of Urban Construction at the former Wuhan Technical University of Severing and Mapping (WTUSM) after the new Wuhan University was reorganized in August 2000. The School of Civil Engineering and Construction at the former WUHEE was derived from the Civil Engineering Department of the former National Wuhan University in 1928. During the nationwide disciplinary adjustment among colleges and universities in 1952, the Civil Engineering Department mentioned above was separated from the former National Wuhan University and incorporated into Zhongnan Civil Engineering College, meanwhile its teaching and research offices such as Soil Mechanics, Construction Mechanics and Steel Reinforced Concrete were incorporated into School of Water Conservancy at the former National Wuhan University and later into Soil Improvement Department and Water Conservancy Construction Department at WUHEE collectively in 1954. In June 1984, the former WUHEE established the Civil Engineering Department whose name was changed into School of Civil Engineering in 1996. Later the teaching and research offices of Soil mechanics, Structural Mechanics, Materials Mechanics and Elastic Mechanics were transferred into the School of Civil Engineering at the former WUHEE in 1998 and the name was once again changed into School of Civil Engineering and Construction, which was one component of the School of Civil Engineering at Wuhan University when it was reorganized in 2000. The former WTUSM established the Industrial and Civil Construction Preparatory Office under the Department of Engineering Surveying in 1984. As time went on, the Department of Civil Engineering was founded in 1990 and had been co-located with the Department of Engineering Surveying, then it had been independent since 1992. In 1993, the Department of Civil Engineering was merged with the Urban Planning Center (established in 1985) to form the School of Urban Construction correspondingly, which was another one component of the School of Civil Engineering at Wuhan University.

The School of Civil Engineering consists of five departments and several research centers, i.e., Department of Structural and Bridge Engineering, Department of Geotechnical Engineering, Department of Engineering Management, Department of Municipal Engineering, Department of Engineering Mechanics, Mechanics Experimental Teaching Center, Civil Engineering Experimental Center, State Engineering Practice Center jointly owned by Wuhan University and China Railway Construction Group Co., Ltd 11th Bureau, among which the Mechanics Experimental Teaching Center is also the Teaching Demonstration Center in Hubei Province. Under the School there are also four province-ministry-level research bases, namely Key Laboratory of Geotechnical and Structural Engineering Safety in Hubei Province, Hydraulic Rock Mechanics Laboratory of Ministry of Education, Engineering Research Center of Building Structure Inspection and Strengthening of Ministry of Education; Research and Innovation Base of large Geotechnical and Structural Engineering Safety Control in Hubei Province. There are two university-level research bases as well, namely Disaster Monitoring and Prevention Research Center and Major Engineering Safety and Technology Research Institute of Wuhan University.

The School has 107 full-time teachers, among whom 31 are professors and 52 are associate professors.
